Variability leads to overestimation of mean summaries

چکیده
Research on ensemble perception has shown that people can extract both mean and variance information, but much less is understand how these two different types of summaries interact with one another. Some research argued are more erroneous in extracting the displays have greater variability. In all three experiments, we manipulated variability displays. Participants reported size a set circles (Experiment 1) length horizontally placed 2a) randomly oriented lines 2b). found estimations were for higher than smaller More critically, there was tendency to overestimate mean, driven by task-relevant task-irrelevant features. We discuss findings relation limitations concurrent summarization ability outlier discounting perception.

Random Sampling Process Leads to Overestimation of β-Diversity of Microbial Communities
The site-to-site variability in species composition, known as β-diversity, is crucial to understanding spatiotemporal patterns of species diversity and the mechanisms controlling community composition and structure. However, quantifying β-diversity in microbial ecology using sequencing-based technologies is a great challenge because of a high number of sequencing errors, bias, and poor reproduc...
متن کاملOverestimation of stability limits leads to a high frequency of falls in patients with Parkinson's disease.
OBJECTIVES To test a hypothesis that patients with Parkinson's disease may not notice discrepancies between their perceived and actual stability limits and cannot keep their centre of gravity within the stability region. SETTINGS Outpatients with neurological disorders in rehabilitation service. SUBJECTS Twenty-one patients with Parkinson's disease (11 men, 10 women; mean duration 5.9 +/- 3...
متن کاملPeri-infarct edema leads to overestimation of myocardial salvage in late reperfused myocardial infarction
Background In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) the myocardial salvage index (MSI) quantified by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is defined as the volumetric difference of myocardial edema, reflecting the perfusion bed, and the infarcted tissue. While after a coronary occlusion time of more than 8 hours, relevant myocardial salvage is highly unlikely, previous data however...
متن کاملPCR inhibition by reverse transcriptase leads to an overestimation of amplification efficiency
This study addresses the problem of PCR inhibition by reverse transcriptase. It has been shown that the inhibition occurs mostly when a small amount of RNA is taken for RT reaction, and it is more visible for rarely expressed transcripts. We show here that the inhibition takes place regardless of what amount of template is utilized for RT. The inhibition possesses a global nature, i.e. the ampl...
متن کاملConfirmation bias leads to overestimation of losses of woody plant foliage to insect herbivores in tropical regions
Confirmation bias, i.e., the tendency of humans to seek out evidence in a manner that confirms their hypotheses, is almost overlooked in ecological studies. For decades, insect herbivory was commonly accepted to be highest in tropical regions. By comparing the data collected blindly (when the observer was not aware of the research hypothesis being tested) with the results of non-blind studies (...
